It is recommended to take one of the free training classes if you have not provided tax preparation in the past. This training will help you get an idea of the diverse situations that some taxpayers are in as well as to become comfortable using the TaxWise software. Wake County volunteers may get free training through the following options:

VITA Volunteers: Volunteer training will be hosted by St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church. Training will occur on 3 days, in which attendance for all 3 days is recommended:

January 6 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

AARP TaxAide Volunteers: Volunteer training is hosted by the Cary Community Center. There are 2 days for training, which is designated as a refresher training course.

Cary, NC 27513

Online Training: The IRS does provide online training through the Link & Learn online training courses. This training is geared to help you learn while practicing. Once you have completed a training course, make sure that you print the completion certificate at the end. You will want to bring this to the volunteer tax site to keep on file.

The Basic course must be completed to provide tax preparation. The Intermediate course is also recommended. Some preparers may wish to complete the Advanced course if they want to prepare more challenging returns.

Returning volunteers may skip ahead and complete the Returning Student Course. This helps familiarize you with the 2008 tax law changes.

For more information on training, feel free to contact Ken or Ronnica at 719-1750.
