If you work 2 jobs, then both employers will be reducing your withholding by $400, even though you are eligible for only one $400 credit. What this means is that at the end of the year, you could find that you owe more, or that your refund is $400 less than you anticipated.

The Making Work Pay Tax Credit was designed to get the money into taxpayers’ hands during the tax year so that they could spend it and stimulate the economy. This is different from the stimulus payments previously received which arrived after the tax year.

For taxpayers with a single source of income, there will likely be nothing to worry about. However, those working multiple jobs, or those receiving a pension could be affected.

For more information about the potential withholding problems that taxpayers may experience, please see IRS Form 4766 which outlines the various situations where adverse tax consequences could occur.

Here are some resources and events we want you to know about: 

• EITC Carolinas, as part of a state EITC Outreach Working Group, has created outreach materials in an effort to bring more awareness to unclaimed refunds. They will also be available for download on the new and improved EITC Carolinas website (www.eitc-carolinas.org) which should be live by Monday at the latest. If you would like to get professionally printed copies of the full color piggybank flyer for 2009 (or Spanish Version),please contact EITC-Carolinas right away. The flyers are being printed next week and we will try to fill your order as quickly as we can.
• As part of the same outreach effort, we have developed a benefits resource guide called “Making Ends Meet.”  This will also be professionally printed (Sample just to give you an idea of what it will look like).  It’s especially appropriate for Asset Building Coaches and any of your staff who are working with families, as well as your VITA site customers themselves.  These will also be available for download on our website sometime next week and you can also order professionally printed copies on the same order form.
• A statewide EITC Awareness Day press conference will take place in Durham next Friday from 11 to 12.  Information about the event is attached.  State Treasurer Janet Cowell and Congressman David Price will be two of the dignitaries speaking.  The Durham and Wake County EITC Coalitions are participating sponsors and you’re all invited to join us at the event.
• The EITC Carolinas website will feature a new Local Program Profiles section so that both press contacts and volunteers can get in touch with you.  I’m working on the content of this section.  What we want to be able to provide is a short overview of each of your programs (1 to 2 sentences) and a contact person, since the press likes local angles and people to interview.  Please let me know if for some reason you DON’T wish to have your program included.
• The new website also has a “What’s New” section where we will feature EITC Awareness Day and events.  If your local coalition is doing something you would like to have listed, please let me know as soon as possible and we will try to get it up on the site.

We have 14,000 of the inner beltline flyers and 6,000 of the outer beltline flyers. Each pack has 250 double-sided flyers. Most of these will be distributed by Wake County Human Services through its various programs to ensure that those who need help the most are informed of the service.

If you only need a few flyers, we can mail out a small batch for your use. Just give us a call (719-1750) to tell us how many you need and where to send them to.

Additionally, these will be available in print version on or about January 14th. You may pick them up at Fiscal Progress during regular business hours once they are ready.

As you can see, there are 2 versions of the flyer with a common second side. Additionally, we have enhanced the Spanish speaking sites for easier identification by non-English speaking taxpayers.

We will be finalizing the drafts of the Wake EITC Coalition partner flyers that will be distributed this year. Please note that these will be sent to the printers that same day with an expected turnaround time of 4 business days. Flyers should be ready for pickup by Tuesday January 13. This is later than we originally hoped, so we will need to make sure we can distribute these to areas of greatest need as quickly as possible!

The high-quality, map-based flyers are expected to be available the first week of January.
