  • We received a response from TaxWise that confirms a new feature on TaxWise 2008 (online version). All of our returns were verified by the IRS.  TaxWise Online requires a simple extra step to view these updated acknowledgements. See the response from TaxWise:

We have a new feature this year in the 2008 TWO, if you click on the view acks button you then also have to click on the get acks button at the bottom of the view acks screen. This should update your acks and status of your returns.

  • On Wednesday, February 4 WRAL featured the free income tax prep programs that are serving North Carolina residents. Jason Evans of the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) discussed how appreciative members are that SECU is providing the free service. All branches of SECU are providing VITA as a service to their members and the surrounding community.

Roger Burton with the Internal Revenue Service’s SPEC outreach program explained the various fees that taxpayers were saving by taking advantage of the free service:

This saves the cost of the return preparation fee, the transmission fee and the refund anticipation loan or whatever name it goes by, (which) is something that can be avoided completely, so they do get all the credit and all the money they’re entitled too.

  • We have had some questions about the first-time homebuyers credit. It is basically a refundable tax credit of up to $7,500 that must be “repaid” in future tax years of 1/15th of the amount each year. In other words, it is an interest free loan to homeowners that purchased their homes after April 8, 2008 and before July 1, 2009. Here is the IRS news release (IR-2008-106) that addresses the First-Time Homebuyers Credit that can be taken on Form 5405.
