  • Homeowners that experienced a foreclosure or were granted a short sale by their lender normally must pay taxes on any “forgiven debt.” This can potentially add tens of thousands of dollars in additional tax liabilities to families that are already in a huge financial bind. Congress however has created a reprieve from this rule to allow for an exemption from the “forgiven debt rule” when mortgage related losses are forgiven.   • Please complete and return by email the information below ASAP for inclusion in the WakeTax.org website and the Wake EITC flyers. We were able to receive some grant funding courtesy of EITC-Carolinas to cover these costs. It should not take more than a couple of minutes. Please get this to me by Wednesday December 17. We hope to have these completed, printed and ready to distribute at our January 6 meeting. Joe, if you already have a listing of all of your sites ready, you can send that instead of this survey!

Pay stub refund anticipation loans are frequently used to provide extra cash for the holidays. However, the cost of these loans is so high that it dramatically reduces the total tax refund.   • TaxWise Online (TWO BLUE) and Training TaxWise Online (TWO GREEN) are now active for the 2008 tax year. Site coordinators will need to login with their Client ID and Admin password to accept the 2008 License Agreement before the users at their site can login.  2008 TaxWise online kits have been shipped out which include the following:

    ·         2008 TaxWise Online registration Code and Client ID

    ·         CD that contains third party products and documentation

    ·         Training CD that contains 100 workshop returns

    ·         TaxWise Online Reference Guide
